Whether to Risk Again

Whether it is the first of the fifth
To risk beginning a new relationship
Demands courage.

To enter into a personal intimate contact
Demands overcoming fear
Fear of the most primitive rejection
Rejection of our inner being,
Of our whole brittle self

When we are so unsure of ourselves
To ask someone to accept us
Is the greatest of all risks

Yet there is this longing for companionship
For a love relationship
Truly a longing for unrequited acceptance
Thinking that it will make us whole
In a way that self acceptance cannot
It is affirmation of worth
Affirmation of value from another’s eye
And so we risk once more

My goal for you
Is for you to be accepting of yourself
Whether you are in a relationship
Or not
